Synopsis
Our Day (Korean title: 우리의 하루, English: Our Day) is a 2023 production directed by renowned Korean director Hong Chang-soo. The movie continues the director's consistent minimalist narrative style and unique image language, presenting people's emotions and thoughts in daily trivialities with two seemingly parallel but secretly echoing story lines.
The first thread of the story tells of an actress who returns to her home country and stays at a friend's house, where she is accompanied by a chubby cat and meets with her cousin, who wants to enter the acting world. In the midst of her idleness, it is as if she can still feel the blooming flowers in her garden whispering to her. Another thread centers around a male poet who lives alone and is being filmed for a documentary by a girl. Although he has given up smoking and drinking for the sake of his health, he reaches for his glass of wine in the midst of exchanges and pleasant jokes with the young male actor.
Both stories take place on the same day and seemingly have no intersections, but reveal a certain echo in the details. For example, the actress and the poet both favor adding chili sauce to their noodles and both own a guitar that they don't often play. Hong Chang-soo is not only the director, but also the writer, cinematographer, editor, artist, and musician, showing that "no trick is better than a trick".
The movie stars Kim Min-hee and Ki Cho-bong, who show the temperature of life and the charm of art in their daily conversations and delicate performances.
