Adapted from the novel of the same name by acclaimed author Jang Kang-myung, Net Army Force (Korean: 댓글부대) is a profoundly realistic film focusing on the operation of public opinion on the Internet and the confrontation of media ethics. Directed by powerhouse director Ahn Kwok-jin and starring Son Seok-goo in the lead role, the movie meticulously portrays the enormous challenges and psychological struggles faced by a reporter in the process of exposing the dark side of society.
The story revolves around Lin Shangzhen, a veteran journalist. During a chance investigation, Lin receives a tip-off that the government or someone behind the scenes is manipulating public opinion on the Internet, and that an organization known as the "Net Army Unit" is quietly operating in the depths of the Internet. These "net troops" have turned the Internet into a battleground of lies and misinformation through the large-scale creation of watered-down comments, manipulation of social media content, and the undermining of public trust in the news.
As the investigation deepens, Lin Shangzhen realizes that what is involved behind these commenting forces is not just simple cybercrime, but a huge and secretive power structure that includes political forces, media executives and even state organs. In the face of immense pressure and threats, he must make a choice - to succumb to the dark forces to protect himself? Or continue to dig for facts and reveal the truth for the society?
Through rich plotting and characterization, the film shows the crisis of trust in modern society in the era of information flood.
