The movie Le assaggiatrici (The Taster), adapted from Rossella Postolino's critically acclaimed novel The Wolf's Table, presents a thrilling tale of women's destinies hidden against the backdrop of World War II. Set in 1943 Germany, the film's 26-year-old heroine, Rosa Sauer, takes center stage in the midst of a war-torn era. She has been deprived of her family by the war, her parents have died prematurely, and her husband, Gregor, is far away from the front line, his life and death uncertain. Caught in the crossfire, she leaves bombed-out Berlin for the countryside, where she relies on her in-laws to survive.

But she doesn't find the haven of peace that she had hoped for, and fate changes her course in a cruel way. Out of the blue, the SS drafted Rosa and nine other women into the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's secret command headquarters. The women become Hitler's food tasters, and three times a day they must try all the Führer's food before he eats it, in order to avoid the risk of poisoning.

Through Rosa's inner struggle, the complex relationship between women, and the portrayal of emotions on the edge of humanity, the movie profoundly explores the contradictory tension between survival and dignity, and between ego and obedience. With delicate camera language, director Silvio Soltini brings this historically neglected real event to the screen, showing the resilience and fragility of women in the whirlpool of war, and their meticulousness in facing life and death in seemingly insignificant positions. This movie is not only a war background movie, but also a female perspective narrative full of humanistic care, bringing a deep and shocking force to the movie market in 2025.
