The movie Hourglass is a domestic youth literary film that combines the elements of youth, growth and love, and shows a straight-to-the-heart experience of growing up with delicate camera work and realistic portrayal of emotions. Adapted from Rao Xueman's novel of the same name and starring Qiu Tian, Bao Shang'en and Huang Minghao, the movie evokes the audience's deep empathy for youthful memories through the main character's psychological metamorphosis and emotional ups and downs.
The story is about the heroine Mo Shengxing (Qiu Tian), who used to have a cozy family, but her life suddenly changed when her mother died in a "heroic act". The unexpected death of her mother leaves the young girl physically and mentally exhausted, while her father's addiction to alcohol and the family's disintegration cause a tidal wave of stress that gradually causes her to suffer from mental illness. At school, she was ostracized and misunderstood by her peers, and her low self-esteem and sensitive personality pushed her into the abyss of loneliness.
During these painful and struggling youthful years, two special people come into Mo's life. One is Misha (Bao Shang'en), a lively and cheerful person who lights up her world like a "little sun", and the other is Lu Li (Huang Minghao), a gentle and considerate senior who guards her like a shadow. Their tolerance and companionship make Mo see the light in the darkness, and slowly find herself through friendship and love.
However, youth is never a smooth journey. Hidden in the bottom of the heart of the uneasiness and fear, gradually let Mo wake up time and time again to push away the people who love her the most. When the teenagers' obsessions are intertwined and the knots in their hearts are hard to untie, the hourglass of destiny quietly flows, taking away the warmth of each other's time one by one. The movie's epilogue ends in a sentimental atmosphere - is it time that makes people forget, or is it the hourglass that remembers for us the memories of youth that can't be revisited and are engraved in our hearts?
Hourglass carves out the pain and growth of youth, and then charts the journey of intertwined emotions and destinies, reminding everyone that the pain and laughter experienced ultimately make up the distinctive "us".
