Synopsis
Between White and Black Keys (Japanese title: 白鍵と黒鍵の間に, English: Between White and Black Keys) is a 2023 Japanese drama film directed by Masatoshi Tominaga, set in Ginza in the late Showa period. The movie unravels a story of music, fate and taboos through the intertwining of jazz and gang culture.
Young pianist Hiromu earns his living in a Ginza concert hall, refining his skills and searching for the true meaning of jazz, while gradually becoming involved in the power struggle in the underground world. One night, mysterious gangsters encourage him to play the classic theme song 'Love Theme' from the movie 'The Godfather'. However, there is a taboo legend in Ginza that only the gang leader's favorite pianist, Minami, is allowed to play this song.
Bo's risky performance not only touches the forbidden zone of Ginza's underworld, but also inadvertently touches the fate of his and Minami's two pianists. As the events unfold, the conflict between music and power, freedom and constraints gradually surfaces, and the night of Ginza is shrouded in an enigmatic atmosphere. With delicate images and a tight narrative rhythm, the movie shows the conflict and integration between art and social reality.
