Synopsis
Lighting Shop (2023), directed by Earl Choi and adapted from the Korean cartoonist Kang Cho's work of the same name, is a movie that combines suspense, drama and exploration of human nature. The story takes place at the end of a deep alley, where a small store called "Lighting Shop" is warmly lit all year round. The mysterious shopkeeper (Liu Yijun) wipes down the light bulbs every day and waits quietly for the customers to visit.
It is as if this is not an ordinary store, but a mysterious space that shines a light on people's hearts. Nurse Xu Nian (Zhang Ruonan) and her boyfriend Zheng Man (Bai Yufan) have just moved into a new apartment near the store, but gradually discover that their neighbors all seem to have unspeakable secrets. Everyone is plagued by life's shadows and inner struggles, and the existence of the "Lighting Store" is like a light shining into their darkness. As the plot progresses, the secrets are revealed little by little in the stormy night, and after Xu Nian steps into the store, the mystery of humanity, redemption and truth gradually emerges. The film not only continues the philosophical thinking of the original comic, but also gives the characters deeper emotional tension through visualization.
