Synopsis
In the Dutch film Kiddo, released in 2023 and written and directed by director Zara de Winger, the story of the life of Rue (Rosa van Leeuwen), an 11-year-old girl, is told. She lives in a children's home and dreams of reuniting with her mother Karina (Celeste Holsheimer), whom she hasn't seen in a long time. One day, Karina appears out of nowhere, dressed in cowboy boots, a wig and sunglasses, in a beat-up old Chevrolet, and "kidnaps" Lou for a road trip to her grandmother's house in Poland. The mother-daughter reunion is full of adventure and conflict, as Lou's initial excitement turns to confusion over her mother's unstable life, and the two gradually deconstruct the traditional mother-daughter relationship through their road trip encounters.
Zara Dwinger crafts this female road movie in a rebellious spirit, with the main story cleverly cutting in classic black-and-white film and cartoon clips, such as homages to classic Hollywood road movie footage, to create a sense of witty and mischievous playfulness. These elements allow the movie to break away from the conventional narrative and explore themes of family, growth and freedom. Lou's pet snake, Henk, is also a cute addition to the journey, adding to the fun. Inspired by the director's personal experience, the movie was selected for the New Generation Children's section of the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival and received critical acclaim.
A road movie for fans of family dramas and adventure stories, this road movie resembles the emotional depth of Little Women or Surviving Wilderness, but is presented with lighthearted humor.
