Synopsis
Scourge 화란 Movie Plot Summary: Released in 2023, this South Korean noir thriller Scourge (formerly known as 화란, also known as Hopeless) from director Kim Chang-hoon tells the dark tale of a teenager's quest for escape from a violent environment. Led by up-and-coming actor Hong Sa-bin (as Yeon-gyu), with popular Korean stars Song Joong-ki in an unpaid role as mid-level gang leader Chi-geon, and BIBI (Kim Hyung-seo) as Yeon-gyu's younger sister, the movie explores the profound themes of domestic violence, the lure of crime and human desperation. The 123-minute film premiered in the "Un Certain Regard" section of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to international acclaim.
The protagonist, Yeon-gyu, is an 18-year-old living in a poor family in a small town in South Korea, suffering from an abusive alcoholic stepfather and neighborhood violence. He dreams of saving money to emigrate with his mother and sister and live a peaceful life abroad. To achieve this, he works multiple jobs, but becomes involved in a gang conflict and runs up debts. In desperation, Yeon-gyu meets Chi-geon, a charismatic mid-level gangster who guides him into the world of crime like an older brother, and begins to get involved in illegal activities ranging from petty thievery to more dangerous assignments, gradually sinking into the lure of violence and money.
